[blockquote cite=’The White Queen, Alice Through the Looking Glass’]Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.[/blockquote]
The human body is an amazing thing. It carries us to far off lands and new horizons, it helps us perform astonishing feats of agility, to conquer mountains, to sway in time with music, to beat out rhythms on dusty earth, to experience things that we will never forget. It gives us freedom.
As we grow, we self-forge, self-create identity. We all give birth to ourselves. And if we believe in the impossible, just maybe we find the strength to become who we are, and find the beauty in that. To be brave, to be powerful, to be different.
This series of work collaborates with classical and contemporary dancers to explore a process of becoming. In these pieces, folklore-esque figures are depicted amid a circle of ancient ruins, inspired by the remains of the Delphic Temple of Apollo, God of renewal. Classical style architecture, culture and philosophy are countered by a wildness, struggle and freedom, with each figure at a different point on their journey towards self-celebration and acceptance. Delicate use of paint and cracked plaster textures are complemented by the neutral sandy-toned colour palette which draws the eye to the evocative motion of the dancer.
